Casa de Campo Hotel Review

Casa de Campo is one of those hotels in the Caribbean that once you visit, all you can think of is returning. As you enjoy the privacy of your luxury oceanfront villa, you can’t help but start thinking about who’s going to make it on the guestlist for your next trip. As you wander the picturesque artist community of Altos de Chavon (located at Casa de Campo) you can’t help but feel that there are so many hidden gems begging to be discovered. There is so much to see and do on this 7000-acre property that one trip isn’t enough. Caribbean Journey visited recently and I’m going to share how we spent our days in hopes of inspiring your next Caribbean Vacation.

rooms // Casa de Campo offers the best of both worlds. It is a full-service hotel with hotel rooms + suites and has hundreds of private villas available for rent. The combination of having these two accommodation styles on the same property makes it an excellent option for groups, such as a family reunion. If you book a private villa for your immediate family, and others decide to join, they have the option of renting an additional villa or perhaps just a hotel room, depending on the need.

We were lucky enough to stay in Villa Mar y Palma for our trip. This five-bedroom luxury oceanfront home sits on the 9th hole of the Teeth of the Dog golf course; a stunning course often referred to as the Pebble Beach of the Caribbean.

The second I walked into the light and airy entryway, I didn’t see any reason to leave the villa – ever. Villa Mar y Palma is one of the most incredible private villas in the Caribbean. The coastal chic decor is in sync with the natural beauty surrounding the home. The enormous rectangular pool is angled just right, giving you the perfect sunset view while floating away your worries, icy cold cocktail in hand. The bright green lawn spills over to the immaculately manicured golf course that seems to roll right into the sea. The setting was so perfect, I was tempted every day to pick up a golf club and try something new.

Our job as travel advisors is to experience as much as we can when we visit hotels, enabling us to set accurate expectations for our client’s vacations. (Travel agents/advisors are the original “travel influencers.”) We spent our second day touring a variety of private villas and taking notes on what different types of home options are available. Casa de Campo has categorized the villas into three classifications: garden, classic, and exclusive. The price points + included amenities increase with each category. Our team of Caribbean travel agents will help you decide which villa best fits your vacation vision and your budget.

what to do // On our third day, we opted for a private horseback riding tour. The world-class stables at Casa de Campo are home to an internationally acclaimed Polo Club. In normal times, guests can sign up for polo lessons or enjoy being a spectator at a match. Our ride was peaceful, and our guides super knowledgeable and friendly. I think this is an activity the entire family would enjoy!

private island // As if Casa de Campo couldn’t get any better, they also arrange day trips to a private island that sits just offshore. Day four found us taking a boat from Casa de Campo’s beach, direct to Catalina Island. The ride is an easy 45 minutes, and as soon as you step off the boat, Casa de Campo’s staff is ready to help you experience the same high level of customer service as you would at the resort. They will walk with you to your preferred spot on the sand, set up your chairs, unpack your picnic lunch, deliver your cooler of ice complete with your beverages of choice… and even give your bucket of champagne its own umbrella.
Catalina Island
A closer look… Catalina Island is simply stunning. It’s everything you want in a tropical beach – ridiculously soft white sand, calm crystal clear turquoise water, unique driftwood, and sea-worn rocks providing interesting visual stimulation in the distance.

dining // Dining at Casa de Campo was one of the sweetest surprises! Admittedly, I’ve never associated the Dominican Republic with culinary excitement, but my mind is forever changed. WOW. Almost every meal left me speechless.

From the simple, fresh ingredients in my balsamic onion galette on the first night to searing fresh fish tableside the second night, Casa de Campo is now on my list of the best places to dine in the Caribbean.

We spent the last full day of our trip at Minitas Beach Club before heading over to Altos de Chavon that evening. A short ride away from most villas, Minitas can be described as a hip hangout for the cool kids. We can start with the food here too, because why not? Food is such an integral part of the travel experience! We reserved a private cabana for the day, providing us ample shade, and proceeded to order one of everything on the menu…almost.

Mintas Beach Club
There are three pools at Minitas, two for families and one for adults. The adults-only one is a stunning infinity design steps away from a full-service bar and complete with cheerful pool/beach servers.

All private villas at Casa de Campo come with swimming pools, but not all are oceanview. So at least once during your trip, you’ll find yourself heading over to Minitas to take a dip in one of their pools and stare at the endless horizon.

Come for the views, stay for the food, (and drinks), and return again in the evening to experience an equally magical atmosphere. Twinkle lights hanging in the trees, an illuminated pool, and if you’re lucky, a beach bonfire will all set the mood for a very memorable night.

My teammates and I agree that our stay at Casa de Campo will forever be one of the best “work” trips we’ve ever taken! This is why it is so essential to book your travel with an experienced travel agent. I’ve been booking villas in the Caribbean for over 20 years, but Casa de Campo always intimidated me. I couldn’t grasp the layout from the dozen or so maps I’ve studied. I wasn’t sure how all of the activities they offer, and fine dining restaurants on property, could fit in a villa vacation. This property required more than a travel agent tour; it needed complete and total immersion. Suffice to say; our immersion project was a total success! I am incredibly confident in my knowledge of Casa de Campo now, and I’m excited for the opportunity to help our clients pick the best villa for their future vacations!

If you’re inspired to look closer at Casa de Campo for your future travel plans, we’d love to assist you.
